Speakers: Priv. Doz. Eva Youkhana, ZEFa Senior Researcher and Carolina Tóbon, ZEFa grant holder from the National University of Colombia

Abstract:  Participatory Monitoring of biodiversity loss in Colombia: Alternatives for understanding and resolving environmental conflicts (ColPaMon) is a project that emerged from the Doctoral Studies Support Program (DSSP), a bilateral graduate school run by ZEF and the Institute for Environmental Studies (IDEA) of the National University of Colombia (UNAL) in Bogotá. The DSSP was launched in 2017 and is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The first phase (2018-2020) supported doctoral students and developed a research agenda on environmental peace in the country, the 2nd phase (2021 – 2025) is supporting master students and has a strong data management component. Within this context, IDEA and ZEF, together with the Institute for Latin American Studies (LAI) at Freie Universität Berlin, specifically with the program trAndeS, set up the project on participatory monitoring of biodiversity loss in Colombia regarding environmental conflicts, financed in this preparatory phase by the BMBF. The purpose of this initiative is to explore alternatives, to better understand the roots of environmental conflicts and to support local stakeholders whose livelihoods are threatened by natural resources’ loss, exploitation or degradation, by working at the crossroads of science, local knowledge and activism. The lecture will present the current state of the project regarding the work on identifying and making visible local and participatory strategies for monitoring and solving pressing environmental problems and violent conflicts in Colombia.

Eva Youkhana, Priv. Doz. and Acting director in the Department of Political and Cultural Change, Center for Development Research (ZEFa), University of Bonn. Project leader and coordinator of the bilateral graduate school on “Environmental Peace and Development in Colombia” (DSSP).
